The basics (hi/bye)

Tip: Dag can mean “hi” or “bye” depending on context.

Informal vs formal (je vs u)

Use je/jij with friends, peers, and most day-to-day situations. Use u to be polite (older people, formal service, officials). Titles help: meneer (sir/Mr), mevrouw (madam/Ms/Mrs).

Verb endings: u bent (you are), u heet (your name is). With je: jij bent/je bent, jij heet/je heet.

Welke studie volg je? — What are you studying?
Titles & address: meneer, mevrouw, dokter, professor. The Dutch are friendly and direct; first names are common once offered.

Pronunciation quick tips

  • g/ch — throat fricative (soft in the south). Goedemiddag, dag.
  • r — varies (tap/uvular); keep it light: r in morgen.
  • ij/ei ≈ “eye”: blij, eigen. oe = “oo” in “food”: doei.
  • Stress usually on first syllable: GOE-de-mi-ddag, HAL-lo.

Word order & question patterns

In main clauses, Dutch is V2: the finite verb sits in position 2. Yes/no questions invert subject and verb.

Statement: Ik ben Aiden. — I am Aiden.
Yes/No question: Ben je Aiden? — Are you Aiden?
Wh-question: Waar kom je vandaan? — Where are you from?

Negation: niet after the main content: Ik heet niet Mark.

Is “Goedenavond” or “Goedavond” correct?

Say Goedenavond. In the morning/afternoon it’s Goedemorgen / Goedemiddag.

Is “Aangenaam kennis te maken” common?

Yes, often shortened to just Aangenaam. Informal: Leuk je te ontmoeten.
